8 Methods to Detect Counterfeit Bills

A real bill has prominent threads, a visible sheen, as well as incomplete depictions.

Counterfeit currency affects the economy negatively, but not many people know how to tell if a bill is real or counterfeit. The Egyptian banknotes have many security features such as the watermark (different in each bill category) amongst others that can help you tell whether a bill is real or counterfeit.

To avoid being the victim of counterfeit bills follow these steps to spot the difference:

1- Rub the bill between your fingers

Dampen your fingers with some water and rub the bill. If it is counterfeit the colors will bleed out.

2- Security line

A real bill will have a security line/margin going through it.

Each bill category (i.e.:1, 5, 20, 50, etc..) has its own watermark.

3- Protruding threads

Unlike a counterfeit bill a real bill will have embossed threads, a luster, and incomplete depictions like the sphinx and the eye of Horus. These depictions will only appear complete in certain angles under direct light.

4- Watermark

Each bill category (i.e.:1, 5, 20, 50, etc..) has its own watermark.

5- Embossed serial number

A real bill will have embossed (raised above the surface of the paper bill) serial number while a counterfeit bill won’t.

6- Texture

A real bill has a rough texture while a counterfeit bill will have a smoother texture like printer paper.

7- Colors

Real bills have clear, bold, and bright colors all over while a counterfeit will have dull and overlapping colors.

8- Serial number

Each real bill will have the same individual serial number printed in four areas on the bill.
