What do the characters on the license plates mean?

 

Each colour category indicates a certain sector as follows:

 

  • Light blue: private vehicles.
  • Orange: taxis
  • Dark blue: police cars
  • Red: trucks and tractors.
  • Brown: commercial vehicles.
  • Yellow: cars entered through customs.
  • Green: diplomatic vehicles.

The license plate characters explained:

 

Cairo governorate:

 

The license plate has 3 letters and 3 numbers with no restrictions. 

 

Giza governorate:

 

The plate has 2 letters and 4 numbers with no restrictions. 

 

Lower &Upper Egypt governorates:

 

They all have 3 letters and 4 numbers with the first letter being unique to each governorate as follows:

Alexandria: starts with س

Dakahlia: starts with د

Al-Sharqia: starts with ر

Menofia: starts with م

Kafr el-Sheikh: starts with ل

Beheira: starts with ب

Gharbia: starts with ع

Fayoum: starts with ف

Qualyubia: starts with ق

Beni Suef: starts with و

Assiut: starts with ى

Minya: starts with ن

Sohag: starts with هـ

 

Canal, Red Sea, North and South Sinai:

 

These plates have 3 letters and 4 numbers like the others but here they always starts with the same 1st letter ط while the 2nd letter is unique to each governorate

Port Said: ط ع 

Ismailia: ط ص

Suez: ط س

Damietta: ط د

North Sinai: ط ا

South Sinai: ط ج

Red Sea: ط ر

 

New Valley (El Wadi El Gedid) and Matrouh:

 

3 letters and 4 numbers starting with a fixed ج  with the second unique per governorate. 

Matrouh: ج هـ

New Valley: ج ب

Qena, Luxor, and Aswan:

 

3 letters and 4 numbers with a fixed 1st letterص  and the 2nd letter being unique to each governorate

 

Qena: ص أ

Luxor: ص ق

Aswan:ص و

Phase 1 launched in the following governorates: Cairo, Giza, Alexandria, Qualyubia, Port Said, Suez, and the Red Sea. 

 

One of the advantages of the initiative is the Ministry of Finance granting a “green incentive” according to the following percentages:

 

Private vehicles: 10% of the new car’s price with a maximum of 22,000 EGP. 

Taxis: 20% of the new car’s price with a maximum of 45,000 EGP

Microbus: 25% of the new car’s price with a maximum of 65,000 EGP
