Netflix’s decision to terminate 150 employees came just one month after their first major subscriber loss in 10 years. Those 150 employees represent around 2% of Netflix’s employees in North America, so the decision to fire them will impact the U.S office.

Netflix’s official statement

 

The company issued an official statement explaining why they laid off 150 employees at once:

 

  • Declining company revenue in 2022.
  • The decision was driven by business needs and does not reflect on the employees’ work capabilities.
  • They were forced to let go of great colleagues due to market needs.

 

Departments affected by the layoffs

 

Netflix itself did not disclose which departments suffered most losses however according to the LA Times the recruiting, communications, & the content offices as well some highly positioned employees were affected.

 

How many employees work for Netflix?

 

According to several sites Netflix employs more than 11000 employees worldwide with almost 7500 in North America alone.

 

How much did Netflix lose?

 

  • In the first quarter of 2022 Netflix lost 200,000 subscribers.
  • Netflix value dropped more than 60 billion dollars as stocks dropped and investors sold their shares in the company.
  • Netflix stocks dropped by 33% in one day.
  • 700,000 canceled subscriptions so far.

 

Some of the main reasons for the loss are the war in Ukraine, the decision to withdraw from the Russian market, and to increase subscription prices in the US.

Netflix subscribers took notice when the streaming service canceled Meghan Markle’s animated series “Pearl”

 

New direction

 

The company is contemplating adding a cheaper subscription option supported by ads.

 

Stricter measures

 

The streaming service is considering how to take a stricter stance on password sharing which affects more than 100,000 subscriptions.
