8 Tips to Protect Your Bank Accounts from online theft!

Have you received a message from your bank or not yet?

After the recent online fraud and theft that targeted some Banque Misr clients by a cyber gang, we must all be vigilant when it comes to protecting our banking information and transactions. Luckily this time Banque Misr was able to recover its clients’ funds but who knows if this could be replicated in the future.

Therefore, we will give you some tips and tricks to protect your bank accounts whether they are current or saving accounts or credit cards.

Tip#1: NEVER EVER tell ANYONE your pins or passwords.

Tip#2: the same applies to the CVV (the 3 numbers at the back of your card). NEVER give them to ANYONE.

Tip#3: Don’t give out the OTP you receive from the bank. Your OTP is a single time password sent by the bank to your registered mobile number with the bank, which you either use to access your account or to confirm an online purchase.

Make sure to always check your monthly statement to confirm there are no unauthorized transactions.

Tip#4: Avoid using your banking applications when you are connected to a public Wi-Fi network (for example in a coffee shop or a mall). Public Wi-Fi networks are not secure, and anyone may be able to access your devices.

Tip#5: If you need to update your personal information please do so on premise only.

Tip#6: Subscribe to your bank’s notification system. This service sends you a message on your registered mobile number whenever any of your cards are used. The message includes the amount withdrawn, as well as the time and location or online site of the withdrawal.

Tip#7: Make sure to always check your monthly statement to make sure there are no unauthorized transactions. If you find any notify your bank immediately!

Tip#8: Avoid using your credit/debit cards on unsecured websites as this puts you at risk of having your information stolen. Try to only use known and secure sites. At the same time don’t save your card information on any site (no matter how much they tempt you with faster checkout) because if the site gets hacked your information will be at risk.

Lastly and most importantly, always be the one to contact your bank, not the other way around. Only this way can you be sure that they are in fact your bank’s customer service representatives.
