What are the differences between 14 karat gold and 18 karat gold?

18K gold is made out of 75% pure gold and 25% other alloys such as Palladium for example while 14K gold is made out of 58% pure gold and the remaining 42% are made-up of other alloys.

14K gold contains other alloys and unlike pure gold which is very fine to the touch and can be scratched easily 14 karat gold is more durable. Pure gold’s colour is closer to orange-yellow than the bright yellow we usually associate with gold.

 Advantages of 14 karat gold

  • Durable and has a unique taste. 14K gold is popular in the United States, the UK and western counties in general.
  • Its colour is closer to the yellow we associate with gold.
  • 14K gold is excellent for engagement rings. In fact almost 90% of engagement rings in the USA are made out of 14 karat gold.
  • Not as easily scratched as 18K gold (due to the higher percentage of pure gold in 18K gold) and is less expensive than 18K gold.

Disadvantages of 14 karat gold

  • 18 karat gold looks richer and more vibrant.
  • 14 karat gold is not as pure as 18 karat gold. Many prefer 18 karat gold over 14 karat gold due to the lower presence of alloys which make it better for those with sensitive skin.
